    abstract = {Recent research suggests that shared behavioral dynamics during interpersonal interaction are indicative of subjective and objective outcomes of the interaction, such as feelings of rapport and success of performance. The role of shared physiological dynamics to quantify interpersonal interaction, however, has received comparatively little attention. In the present study, we investigate the coordination dynamics of multiple psychophysiological measures and their utility in capturing emotional dynamics in teams. We use data from an experiment where teams of three people built origami boats together in an assembly-line manner while their heart rate, skin conductance, and facial muscle activity were recorded. Our results show that physiological synchrony of skin conductance measures and eletromyographic measures of the corrugator supercilii develops spontaneously among team members during this cooperative production task. Moreover, high team synchrony is found indicative of team cohesion, while low team synchrony is found indicative of a teams' decision to adopt a new behavior across multiple production sessions. We conclude that team-level measures of synchrony offer new and complementary information compared to measures of individual levels of physiological activity.},

    abstract = {Many organizations, both public and private, are changing their structure to a complex matrix in order to meet the growing complexity in the world in which they operate. Often, those organizations struggle to obtain the benefits of a matrix organization. In this article, we discuss how to get a matrix to work, taking a multi-contingency perspective. We translate the matrix concept for designers and managers who are considering a matrix organization and argue that three factors are critical for its success: (1) Strong purpose: Only choose the matrix structure if there are strong reasons for doing so, (2) Alignment among contingencies: A matrix can only be successful if key contingencies are aligned with the matrix’s purpose, and (3) Management of junctions: The success of a matrix depends on how well activities at the junctions of the matrix are managed.},

Weconstruct an experiment which enables us to manipulate emotions and study theconsequences of these manipulations over time. We find that self-report data at theend of our experiment match well with the circumplex model of affect, but that themodel changes with experimental context over time. We suggest methods todetermine when the circumplex model of affect is constant across different contextsand can be used to compare changes in emotions. Further we suggest a pragmaticsolution when such comparisons cannot readily be made.},

In this paper, we examine whether decisions to use mesh is evidence based. Based on data of 30,398 patients from the Swedish National Quality Register of Gynecological Surgery we examine factors related to decisions to use mesh. Our results indicate that decisions to use mesh are not evidence based, and cannot be explained neither by FDA safety communications, nor by medical conditions usually assumed to predict its usage. Instead, decisions to use mesh are highly influenced by the geographical placement of surgeons. Therfore, decisions to use mesh are boundedly rationality, rather than rational.},

Kroes calls Big Data the ”new oil.” For traditional industries and the service sector, Big Data will create a huge number of commercial opportunities. For the public sector, Big Data offers a promising route to service improvement and transparency as well as a tool for making infrastructure and other investments.Politicians and policymakers are aware of both the potential and the dangers of Big Data. In 2012, the Obama Administration launched the Big Data Research and Development Initiative in the United States, and the European Commission (EC) is taking steps to remove obstacles to the use of Big Data through legislation, standards setting, and its R\&D programmes. Hand-in-hand with newdata-protection legislation, the EC wants to formulate an overall cybersecurity strategy to ensure that individual and organizational data are properly used and protected. Alongside harmonized rules for how data is handled, the EC is pushing for standards to allow the interoperability and integration ofdata. Other government initiatives focus on technological development and infrastructure projects.This White Paper offers ideas and recommendations to further increase the value of Big Data initiatives while protecting against their risks. Governments, universities, and business all have a role to play in this endeavor, and we hope that decision makers will find the paper helpful as they pursue their respective tasks. We acknowledge and thank the speakers and participants in the 2013 World Summit on Big Data and Organization Design for their time, hard work, and contributions. abstract = {Miles-Snow strategic typology has been successfully used in research in strategy and organizational design. The key dimension underlying Miles-Snow typology is the organizational response to changing environmental conditions. In this paper a new model is proposed based on the type of relationship of a firm with its stakeholders (shareholders, employees, customers, authorities etc.) who are considered as suppliers of key strategic resources. Relationship between the firm and its particular stakeholder is presented on an input-output like scheme and the variants of the position of the firm towards all its stakeholders serve as foundation for determining strategic orientation types. The proposed model allows interpreting the Miles and Snow typology in a new way and in particularthe often neglected reactor type. Examples of the use of the proposed model are also provided. The reformulated model will allow for a new dynamic perspective in the context of the Miles and Snow model.},

We were pleased to announce the establishment of an open access journal dedicated entirely to advancing the theory and practice of organization design. Special features of JOD include a dual emphasis on theory and practice, an orientation toward the future, openness to methodologies that allow for organizational prototyping, and a forum for the discussion of new organizational forms. JOD introduced four different article formats which enable authors to find the proper voice for their work (research articles, translational articles, point of view articles, and urgent issue articles). Judging the various articles published in Vol. 1, we believe that JOD is headed in the right direction, and we are optimistic about its future.},

    abstract = {Organizational design rules are contingent if-then statements about what a good design should be for a given situation. Today’s challenge is to look forward to devise organization design rules for a different future with greater uncertainty and greater interdependency – all with dynamic performance demands. These new demands call for new design rules for coordination, incentives and leadership, among others. Our existing rules are mostly based upon past experience and empirical studies of what is. What might be – going beyond what we have observed and explained of yesterday and today to help design for a future new situation – is a disciplined response to examine the new contingencies of organizational design and their design consequences. Computational laboratories permit us to go beyond what is to develop and examine new design possibilities and boundaries to explore a future world of what might be. We need to revise existing rules and perhaps devise totally new design rules for managing uncertainty and interdependency to design efficient, effective and sustainable organizations. In this paper, we explore the development and evaluation of organizational design rules for the future.},

    abstract = {Recent studies show that the relationship between structure and inertia in changing environments may be more complex than previously held and that the theoretical logics tying inertia with flexibility and efficiency remain incomplete. Using a computational model, this article aims to clarify this relationship by exploring what structural properties enable continuous change in inertia-generating organizations and what their performance consequences are in dynamic environments. The article has three main findings: First, employing managers who anticipate change is not enough to generate continuous change; it is also necessary to raise both the rate of responsiveness and desired performance. Second, continuous change increases average organizational performance and reduces its variation. Third, organizations’ capacity for continuous change is counterintuitively limited by the organizations’ capacity to build inertia. These are important insights, because they suggest that with the right design, organizations may be both more flexible and reliable than commonly believed.},

    abstract = {The global financial crisis has forced a profound rethink of the optimal form of capitalism and the relationship between business, environment and government. The current crisis has exposed systemic failures of corporate governance in administering the purpose of the firm. It has shown the failure of global governance to match the new dynamics and consequences of globalization. Governments are re-examining corporate accountability to society and how companies earn their license to operate. Furthermore companies are re-examining their code of conduct and leadership values. Thus, sustainability is an important driver in organizations and its impact and effect on organization design is critical. Development of organization design, structure, processes, and human skills and values are needed to create the sustainable organization for the future. This paper discusses the requirements to be a sustainable organization. Here we follow the Global Compact criteria. The consequences for processes, structure, and human skills and values are analyzed. In particular the analysis will investigate exploration and exploitation from a holistic perspective using the principles of requisite variety and information-processing and how to maintain flexible leadership to fit current challenges as well as be agile in a dynamic world. The result of the analysis will be illustrated by public and private case studies.},

Their overall conclusions have been strikingly similar: organization and management theories may matter a great deal to the scholars who produce them, but they matter very little to managers. As an applied discipline, the field of organization design offers a true opportunity to bridge the worlds of scholarly research and management practice. Problems of organization design exist at the nexus of theory and practice, demanding rich understanding, robust theorizing, strong empirical analysis, and futuristic thinking. Further, with rapid technological evolution, new forms of organizing, and dynamic economic and social environments within and across countries, problems of organization design in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors are ever more complex and challenging, for both researchers and managers.},

There is no version of OrgCon included in this book.</p> <p>In today's volatile business environment, organizational design is a serious challenge for any manager, whether of a multinational enterprise or a small team.</p> <p>This book sets out a step-by-step approach to designing an organization. All the key aspects of organizational design are covered, including goals, strategy, structure, process, people, coordination and control, and incentives. The text engages with critical issues affecting organisations, such as globalization, worldwide competition, deregulation and ever-new technologies, and contains many helpful features such as end-of-chapter reviews and unique step-by-step diagrams to orientate the reader in the design process.</p> <p>Diagnostic questions help the reader to determine the changes needed in an organization.</p> <p>The action oriented approach of this text helps the reader to assess and re-design the complex organizations of today, and plan for the information-rich organizations of tomorrow.</p> <ul> <li>Allows reader to see organizational design as an integral part of an overall business strategy where high performance is a must</li> <li>Focuses on actions - not just theory or abstract ideas</li> <li>Step-by-step approach allows readers to understand and assess effectiveness of design throughout the process - not just at the end</li> <li>Online access to OrgCon related material, companion software by the authors. A highly effective decision support tool which helps readers explore strategic and performance issues around organizational design</li> </ul> <h2>Editorial Reviews</h2> <p>This book makes the complex task of designing an organization understandable. It covers the main academic perspectives well, so any reader will find his or her favorite approach covered. I especially enjoyed the book's focus on application – the step-by-step approach, diagnostic questions that accompany each topic, and an emphasis on the importance of fitting key organizational components together.</p> <p><b>Charles C. Snow</b><br /> Chair, Department of Management and Organization, Smeal College of Business, Penn State University </p> <p>“In Organizational Design: A Step-by-Step Approach, Burton, DeSanctis and Obel have struck a fine balance between theoretical rigor and managerial clarity. The information processing theory that underpins their organization design approach is rigorous and consistent. The book walks a reader through a clearly articulated series of steps to assess the contingency variables of strategy and environment, and to configure the organization's structure, process \& people, and coordination \& control to fit its context. This book makes a significant contribution toward advancing the process of organizational design from an art to a craft. It works well as both a monograph and a textbook.”</p> <p><b>Raymond E. Levitt, Ph.D.,</b><br /> Professor of Civil \& Environmental Engineering, <br /> Director, Collaboratory for Research on Global Projects,<br /> Academic Director, Advanced Project Management Program, SCPD </p> <p>“This offers a comprehensive view of organizational design, covering a broad range of aspects. It includes not only strategy and structure, but also task design, leadership, organizational climate and incentives. The work draws widely on the concepts from research to offer a holistic model. It uses the contingency approach to spell out what fits are required for high performance, and what misfits should be avoided.</p> <p><b>Lex Donaldson</b><br/> Professor of Organizational Design, Australian Graduate School of Management (a joint venture the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, Sydney, Australia).. </p>},

    abstract = {<b>Purpose</b>
    <ul>
    <li>The purpose of this paper is to investigate how misalignments between the organizational climate (measured as information‐processing demand) and the leadership style (measured as information‐processing capability) may result in negative performance consequences.</li></ul>
    <b>Design/methodology/approach</b>
    <ul>
    <li>The empirical part of the paper is based on questionnaire data. Key informant is the CEO and thus there is a focus on the CEO's perception of climate and leadership style. Data are subjected to regression analysis.</li></ul>
    <b>Findings</b>
    <ul>
    <li>The results indicate that misalignments between climate and leadership style are problematic for organizational performance. This is supported by the empirical findings that show partial support for three out of four hypotheses and full support for the fourth hypothesis.</li></ul>
    <b>Research limitations/implications</b>
    <ul>
    <li>Data cover information on Danish small- and medium-sized firms. These cross-sectional data and cannot study the effects of misalignments over time.</li></ul>
    <b>Practical implications</b>
    <ul>
    <li>Because the findings show that misalignments between climate and leadership style are problematic to organizational level of performance, this implies that in case of misfits either the climate or the leadership style must be changed.</li></ul>
    <b>Originality/value</b>
    <ul>
    <li>The main contribution of the paper is that the framework allows an explicit understanding of which managerial actions are needed to manage particular types of climate. Further, the framework enables an understanding of how misalignments may result in poor performance.</li></ul>},

    abstract = {This chapter discusses the notions of affective events and employee emotions, and integrates these concepts into previous work on psychological climate, as represented in the multicontingency model (Burton et al., 2006; Burton and Obel, 2004). Furthermore, this chapter discusses the effect of organizational emotions on organizational information processing and decision making, which helps to explain the role of organizational climate in the multicontingency model. In the first part of the chapter, we define the concept of psychological climate and its apparent lack of association with employee behavior. Building on recent research findings on the role of emotions in organizational behavior, we propose psychological climate as affective events, which influence employee emotions. Emotions, in turn, represent a conditional state of mind, which influences employee information processing and consequent behaviors. Thus, psychological climate, conceptualized as affective events, is an important concept within the multi-contingency model of organizational design. The final part of the paper provides a first step towards integrating emotions, through their relationship with psychological climate, into the multicontingency model. Here, we discuss the concept of rational emotionality, which captures how emotions influence peoples' abilities to make rational decisions.},

    abstract = { A leader's job is often to attempt achieving organizational alignment. Many theories propose climate as an effective means to help leaders carry out this task. Nevertheless, our understanding of which exact actions are needed to manage climate remains somewhat diffuse. We present a new cognitive-oriented view on climate, which enables us to discuss the influence of climate on managing the bal-ance between integration and adaptation. In this article, we argue that climate is not as easy to manage as previously argued. In the short run, climate may serve as an effective emotional inertia to maintain the system in fit, as long as it is properly perceived and supported by the leadership style. In the longer run, climate is more influential to change, making it difficult to perceive it properly. This challenge may lead to transformative changes, causing leaders to have little control.},

    abstract = {Nærværende nummer af Ledelse og Erhvervsøkonomi er redigeret af professor Erik Johnsen. Dette markerer samtidig Johnsen’s 50 års jubilæum i tidsskriftets redaktion. En enestående begivenhed i et tidsskrifts historik. For i 50 år har Johnsen på fornem vis sat sit fingeraftryk på udviklingen af tidsskriftets faglighed og redaktionelle linje.Det hele begyndte i 1958, hvor Johnsen, som netop var blevet amanuensis, blev udnævnt til redaktionssekretær i tidsskriftet som dengang hed Erhvervsøkonomisk Tidsskrift. I 1987 ændredes navnet til Ledelse og Erhvervsøkonomi. I perioden 1968 til 1998 var Johnsen hovedredaktør. Og siden har han været redaktør under skiftende hovedredaktørers ledelse.Dette nummer af Ledelse og Erhvervsøkonomi markerer ikke alene Johnsens 50 jubilæum som medlem af redaktionen. Det markerer også, at der sættes et punktum for Johnsen æra i tidsskriftets historie. For Johnsen har besluttet at stoppe og udtræde af redaktionen.På vegne af de mange læsere som gennem tiden har nydt glæde af Ledelse og Erhvervsøkonomis artikler samt det store antal forfattere, som har bidraget til tidsskriftets faglighed og status, vil vi gerne rette en stor tak til Johnsen for den enorme indsats, han gennem årene har lagt i den løbende professionalisering af tidsskriftet. For spørgsmålet om hvordan Ledelse og Erhvervsøkonomi har kunnet blive bedre, har stedse stået på Johnsens dagsorden.Som medredaktører og kolleger vil vi desuden rette en stor tak til Johnsen for et uhyre konstruktivt, indsigtsfuldt og til tider også munter samspil.},

    abstract = {The purpose of this article is to build a coherent framework of the four main theories relating to the internationalization of firms, in order to facilitate better business teaching and research. Yet, theories of the internationalization of firms are broad and rest on different underlying assumptions. With the purpose of clarifying the potential for integration of partial theories and fragments in a more logically connected theoretical area, this article offers a meta-theoretical overview of four perspectives within international business economics: Research and its related background, basic assumptions, study area, and implications of the theories in the internationalization of the firm. abstract = {What is a good measure for an action-oriented leadership style to employ in the Multi-contingency Model? We develop leadership dimensions of delegation and uncertainty avoidance using factor analysis and test its implications, here on strategic implementation. An explore-exploit view of strategy is similarly confirmed using factor analysis. Using these complementary measures, we test four misfit hypotheses. Of the four, the data from medium-sized Danish enterprises support two hypotheses: a strategy of low exploration is a misfit with a leadership style of high delegation; a strategy of low exploitation is a misfit with a leadership style of high uncertainty avoidance. For researchers, an action-oriented leadership approach is integral to the multi-contingency theory and greatly enriches our theory of organizational design. For CEOs, leadership is made operational and action-oriented to solve problems and resolve misfit conditions for good performance.},

    abstract = {The design of organizations has been a prime characteristic of management theory and practice over the past several decades. However, there has been little change in the fundamental theory, principles and concepts of Organization Design since the introduction of contingency theory in the 1970s. Nevertheless, over the past 25 years organizational reality has changed dramatically with the advent of all sorts of communication systems, AI agents, information technology, knowledge management systems, and more. Therefore leading researchers in Organization Design who understand the situation have undertaken to address the problem.Organization Design: The Evolving State-of-the-Art will be organized in four sections: (1) Theoretical and Practical Issues, (2) Fit, Contingency and Configuration, (3) Design and Performance, and (4) The Dynamics of Adaptation and Change. The book will be a broad discussion of topics in the field, but still each individual paper will provide in depth analysis of the topic. A common element and theme to all of the chapters is a focus on core theories in organization design and emerging perspectives. The book will be a 2005-benchmark publication of organization design theory, principles and concepts, and on the basis of this benchmark publication, the editors will encourage researchers and students to further develop the field. The recent development in organization design has been sporadic; hence this book will be an important step in creating better theoretical models and stronger empirical analyses that take advantage of advances in estimation methods allowing for more complex causal modeling and stimulation technologies.},

    abstract = {A firm's organizational climate—its degree of trust, morale, conflict, rewards equity, leader credibility, resistance to change, and scapegoating—helps determine its success.
    Likewise, organizational strategy—the firm's commitment to capital investment, innovation, quality, and the like—has also been found to be an important determinant of firm performance.
    However, prior work has most often explored the impact of climate and strategy separately, and not in tandem.
    In our study, we develop a measure of organizational climate comprised of tension, resistance to change, and conflict, and go on to show that at least for some pairings of a firm's climate and its strategy, there is a negative effect on return on assets (ROA).

    abstract = {We develop a rule-based contingency misfit model and related hypotheses to test empirically the Burton and Obel (1998) multi contingency model for strategic organizational design.
    The model is a set of “if-then” misfit rules, in which misfits lead to a loss in performance; they are complements to the strategy and organizational contingency theory fit rules. Using data from 224 small- and medium-sized Danish firms, misfits are categorized and identified.
    Then, performance hypotheses are developed and tested using regression models. We confirm the hypotheses that firms with situational misfits or contingency misfits, or both, incur performance losses in return on assets compared with firms with no misfits. Contrary to our hypotheses, we did not find that additional misfits lead to increased performance loss.
    Our results suggest that just one misfit of any kind may significantly compromise performance. These results yield a deeper understanding of organizational contingency theory, as well as implications for the rule-based fit-misfit organizational design model.},

    abstract = {This paper outlines an alternative theory of organization-environment coevolution that generalizes a model of organization adaptation first proposed by March (1991), linking firm-level exploration and exploitation adaptations to changes in the population of organizations. The theory considers organizations, their populations, and their environments as the interdependent outcome of managerial actions, institutional influences, and extra-institutional changes (technological, sociopolitical, and other environmental phenomena). In particular, the theory incorporates potential differences and equifinal outcomes related to country-specific variation. The basic theses of this paper are that firm strategic and organization adaptations coevolve with changes in the environment (competitive dynamics, technological, and institutional) and organization population and forms, and that new organizational forms can mutate and emerge from the existing population of organizations. The theory has guided a multicountry research collaboration on strategic and organization adaptations and the mutation and emergence of new organizational forms from within the existing population of organizations.},

    abstract = {Opportunism is one central premise of the M-form hypothesis. This premise is investigated in a laboratory experiment using M-form and U-form organizations under incentives based on corporate profit and divisional profits. There was greater opportunism under U-form organization than under the M-form, and under divisional profit than under corporate profit incentives. Additionally, a misguided altruism lead a number of individuals to misrepresent information. The M-form yields higher performance than the U-form. Also, corporate profit incentives yield higher total profit than divisional profit incentives. The results partially explain why empirical studies do not strongly support the M-form hypothesis.
    A laboratory experiment was developed. Within the hierarchical organization, one division was played by an individual; the other divisions and headquarters were run on the computer. The research question was to test the opportunism proposition: would individuals understand a situation to be opportunistic, could they figure how to take advantage of the situation and would they take advantage?
    Yes, individuals readily understand an opportunistic situation, almost all knew how to be opportunistic, and many took advantage, but some were altruistic in their behavior.},
